Melbourne CBD Night Photography Workshop

Melbourne comes alive after dark!

Try your hand at night photography with this illuminating experience and let us show you how to take inspiring images after dusk in the world's most livable city, Melbourne.

Under the guidance of our Explore Photography tutors, you'll be shown some of the best locations and vantage points within the Melbourne CBD to make the most of this amazing city.

At dusk, Melbourne truly does come alive. We start with a quick overview of night photography, including equipment and techniques. You'll learn creative ways to take images in low light situations, and understand more about the exposure triangle. You will be given personal, easy to understand photography tuition and information relevant to your camera.

During this hands-on practical workshop, you will not only learn how to take stunning images in a city enviroment at night, you'll also take away techniques that you will be able to apply to other photography genres.

Take your night photography to the next level with guidance and tuition. During this workshop we'll cover topics such as:

  • Low light photography
  • Exposure fundamentals
  • How to shoot light trails
  • Composing for cityscapes
  • Focus in low light
  • Working creatively with reflections
  • Shooting at high ISO's
  • Using light creatively
  • Motion blur
  • Long exposure photography

This workshop is designed with a hands-on approach. Under guidance, you will be photographing Melbourne with practical and easy to understand tuition. You will walk away from this workshop with a new skillset and greater knowledge of low light photography.

Post workshop, we'll revise the evening's images and answer all your questions. On going support will be provided via email if required.

This workshop is aimed at those that already have a basic understanding on the use of their camera.

  • In the event of an unfavourable forecast such as extremely strong winds, heavy rain or storms, we will postpone the workshop and participants will be given a credit towards a future workshop.

What To Bring

Your camera of course! You should have a manual DSLR or mirrorless camera to get the most out of this workshop (or one that has some manual settings)

A sturdy tripod. If you don't have one let us know and we'll loan you one for the workshop - with thanks to our partners at Benro.

Lenses - fast prime lenses are great for low light conditions, but any lens will do - bring what you have!

Remote shutter release or cable release. If you don't have one we can use the timer delay on your camera.

Memory cards, fully charged batteries, notepad & pen.

Your camera manual. If you're a little unsure on how to adjust settings on your camera, bring the manual along. It will save precious time fiddling around on location.

Other neccesseties - good walking shoes!
